Why Cape Disappointment?
Located in the very southwestern corner, Cape Disappointment looks out at the mouth of the Columbia River as it enters the ocean. There are few RV campgrounds able to boast the sense of awe one feels beside the largest river in the Northwest colliding with the mighty Pacific Ocean.
Suffice it to say, Cape Disappointment hits the jackpot when it comes to natural beauty. With a sweeping panorama that features the river, ocean, and miles of breathtaking Northwest forest, this park is not lacking one bit in the scenery. If you have a flair for photography, one trip to Cape Disappointment will give you more than enough material to show off to friends or clients. If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, the park includes hiking trails, boat ramps, beach exploration, and a plethora of fishing opportunities, both freshwater and saltwater. Here’s a great bucket list of fun activities during your stay:
- North Head lighthouse Trail. This trail winds through the lush forest and ends at the historic lighthouse. While it is an easy hike, complete with a gravel path and helpful signs, the whole family will be in awe of the landscape along the way, as well as the ocean view at the end of the trail.
- Cape Disappointment lighthouse trail. Slightly more rugged and narrow than the North Head trail, this hike offers similar views of both the beautiful coastal rainforest and occasional sightings of the ocean. Once you pass the Coast Guard base, you’ll be just upon the lighthouse and an incredible view of the ocean. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy the view!
- Beach exploration. The silver sands of Cape Disappointment stretch for miles. Whether you want to sit and relax or head out and explore something new, the beach is a short walk away from the campsite, ready for any brand of adventure.
- Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. In November of 1805, Lewis and Clark reached the mouth of the Columbia river. The interpretive center commemorates their brave journey across the nation and their joyful arrival at the ocean. Learning about the area’s past is fascinating; just imagine standing on the same ground as the famous U.S. Corps of Volunteers for Northwest Discovery over a century ago. The interpretive center is as exciting as it is educational, and the whole family will leave with a new perspective on the region’s history and discovery as a whole.
RV Camping Accommodations
The campground at Cape Disappointment offers 60 full hook-up RV sites, and 18 with just water and electricity. These sites are up to 45 feet in length, accommodating any RV ranging from travel trailers, to fifth wheels, and full Class A diesel. The park includes a store that carries ice, wood, fishing gear, and delicious summer food that can be delivered straight to your campsite. Factor in 14 showers and a full dump station, and you’ve got a park that’s perfect for any type of family vacation.
